| Sophora japonica Japanese pagodatreeCulture: Although sensitive to cold when young, this species seems to develop more cold hardiness with increased age. It prefers well-drained, loamy soils, but is fairly adaptable. Canker, powdery mildew, and leaf hoppers can be problematic on this species. Usage: This is probably an ideal park tree, providing late summer interest with little maintenance. I can see possibilities as a street tree, although the messiness created by falling petals, rachis, etc. could be a problem in more manicured areas. Lack of cold hardiness is a limitation in the Northern U.S. The proposed change in scientific name can be found in the J. of Arboriculture 23(4):July 1997. |
