Sorbus alnifolia
Korean mountainash

Culture: Unfortunately, this Sorbus is not tolerant to varying conditions, and needs to be planted in a well-drained soil in full sun. Soils can be acidic or neutral in pH, but this species is sensitive to air pollution.

Galls, cankers, rusts, scabs, aphids, mites, and scale are just a few of the problems that this species can have; fortunately, none of them are severe. The plant has demonstrated resistance to the more fatal borer and fireblight problems common to mountainashes.

Usage: So far this tree appears to be an excellent choice for specimen or accent plantings. The showy flowers, leaves, fruit, and bark certainly give it something to brag about, as well as its increased fireblight and borer resistance. Care must be taken in placement, however, as stress can be devastating, even to established trees.
