| Taxus x media Anglojap yewCulture: Similar to that of the Japanese yew, this species will grow in full sun to fairly dense shade and prefers acid to neutral moist soils. As with other yews, good soil drainage is a must. This species will tolerate pruning and shearing much like the Japanese yew, resulting in its use in sheared hedges and topiary. See the notes under Taxus cuspidata. Being slightly less cold hardy than the Japanese yew, this species must be used with caution in the upper Midwest. Although several insects and diseases are possible, most are not a problem for this relatively trouble-free plant. Usage: Yews are a common part of foundation plantings and are widely used in hedges and screens due to their tolerance of shearing and their adaptability to different light levels. |
