Acer japonicum 'Aconitifolium' Monkshood-leaved fullmoon maple
Valvate and green, the 1/8" - 3/16" buds turn a lustrous red-purple in the winter. The buds are similar to Acer palmatum in the sense that both have a small fringe of hairs at the base of the buds, producing a "nest-like" effect. The buds are usually produced in pairs at the end of the stem.
