Aesculus pavia
Red buckeye

Culture: The red buckeye is best-suited to well-drained, moist soils in full sun to partial shade.

This species is relatively devoid of problems, although powdery mildew may occur in non-ventilated sites. I have observed a few specimens with fairly extensive leaf blotch, although this species usually has relatively little problem with this disease.

Usage: Similar to Aesculus x carnea, this species makes an excellent landscape specimen or accent plant. Its smaller size makes it more manageable, while its interesting texture and flowers make it stand out in almost any location.
