Common paw-paw

Large, 6-petaled, reddish-brown to purple flowers are borne in early to mid May just before the leaves emerge. They are 1 to 2" in diameter and smell similar to fermenting grapes. Because of their dark color, they are not that noticeable froma distance despite their size.
