Berberis thunbergii
Japanese barberry

Culture: The Japanese barberry is very adaptable, withstanding extreme hot or cold temperatures and tolerating urban conditions. It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. With too much shade it will become loose and open.

This species is generally fairly problem-free in the landscape.

Usage: This adaptable species can be used as a barrier plant, in hedges or in borders for its foliage effects. Smaller and colored foliage selections add many possible uses in the perennial border or rock garden.
