Calycanthus floridus
Common sweetshrub

Dark reddish brown and 1 to 2" across, the singly-borne flowers emit a pleasant fruity fragrance and are borne primarily in mid-May and then sporadically into June and July. Because of their dark color, they tend to be somewhat hidden in the foliage and only slightly showy from a distance. Both the showiness and fragrance varies from plant to plant.
