Castanea mollissima
Chinese chestnut

Culture: The Chinese Chestnut prefers acid soils but will tolerate higher pH. It performs best in full sun. Because of a deep taproot, this species should be transplanted when young.

This species is resistant to the Chestnut Blight but not completely immune. It has few serious problems.

Usage: Although used as a replacement for the American chestnut, it is not a common sight in the landscape. The tree is planted for the edible fruit but the prickly husks are very sharp and difficult to handle.
