Alternate, simple and lanceolate to narrow ovate in shape, the 3-4" deciduous leaves are generally smoother and glossier than those of Celtis occidentalis. The leaves have an oblique base and may be completely entire or have only the lower 1/3 of the leaf blade free of serrations. This species is often (but not always) free of the nipple gall that is commonly found on Celtis occidentalis.
