Cladrastis kentukea
American yellowwood

Although smooth like the bark of a beech tree, the ornamental bark of the yellowwood is dark gray in color. The smooth dark gray bark along with the narrow branch angles makes a good winter identification feature.

At the Morton Arboretum, one of the roads opens into a small grove of yellowwoods, and I can vividly remember the way the afternoon sun filters through the leaves to illuminate the bark, brightening the under-story in an otherwise dark place.
