Cladrastis kentukea

Cladrastis kentukea
American yellowwood

Culture: Although this species prefers well-drained soils in full sun, it is pH adaptable, preferring alkaline conditions. Limbs should only be pruned in summer, since yellowwoods are known as "bleeders," and will drip sap continuously if cut in the spring or winter.

Usage: This tree makes an excellent specimen or mass planting. The flowers are best appreciated when located near entryways and windows, filling the summer air with a delightful fragrance. Before selecting, the weak branch angles should be considered and consequently, not used in areas prone to heavy snow and ice loads lest breakage occur.
