Corylus americana

Monoecious like other members of this family, the expanded male catkins are 2-4" long, yellowish brown and borne March. The female flowers are mostly hidden in the bud and extend only the thin red stigmas and styles from the bud. This enclosure of the ovary by the bud scales provides a measure of cold protection. The long pendulous and flexuous male catkins provide a noticeable and somewhat interesting display in early spring.
