Cornus racemosa
Gray dogwood

Young stems are reddish brown, slender and have gray lenticels. As they age, they turn tan and then ultimately a distinctive light gray. The stem pith is off-white in the first year turning to a light tan in the second year. Persistent red fruit pedicels add a minor ornamental effect and remain on the stems into early winter.
