Cornus sericea
Redosier dogwood

Culture: In the wild this species is often found in wet swampy situations. It is fibrous rooted, easily moved and adaptable to a wide range of soils and environmental conditions. It tolerates full sun to moderate shade.

Stem canker is the most severe problem, but occasionally scales, bagworms and leaf spot cause disfigurement. Keeping the plant vigorous through regular renewal pruning, which removes the oldest stems to the ground, will help to prevent problems with canker and borers. The renewal pruning will also maximize the winter color, as it is the new stems that have the best color.

Usage: A very popular plant in the landscape, it is often used in groupings or as a shrub border. The bright red young twigs add color to the drab winter landscape. The winter stems are best viewed when contrasted with snow or when plants are placed in front of evergreens.
