Reddish-purple and brownish pubescent on young growth and becoming gray-brown and glabrous with age, the arching stems exhibit a slight fishbone branching pattern (although not as obvious as Cotoneaster horizontalis. Like most cotoneasters, the stems emit a maraschino cherry-like odor when scratched. The strongly arching stems are useful for winter identification.
