Smoke-like in appearance, the showy inflorescence is composed of large billowy panicles of small, insignificant 1/8 - 1/4" yellow, 5-petaled, dioecious flowers and an abundance of sterile pedicels covered with greenish hairs that turn brown or slightly purplish from June through September.
