Crataegus phaenopyrum
Washington hawthorn

Covered with numerous and extremely sharp 1-2" slender and slightly curved thorns, the slender stems exhibit a zig-zagging appearance and are reddish brown in the first year. The stems develop an onion-skin effect in the second year and gradually turn light gray in color as they age.
