Cunninghamia lanceolata
Common chinafir

An uncommon large narrow pyramidal evergreen species that lacks cold hardiness for the Midwest. The wood of this species is highly valued in China for its durability, rot resistance and ease of working. It is used for a wide variety of tasks including construction of coffins. This species will also resprout from cut trunks, which is unusual for an evergreen.

Habit:Pyramidal with a dominant central leader, but less than formal in habit
Size:30 to 80' high, 10 to 30' wide
Color:Medium green to light bluish green
Texture:Fine in texture based upon needle size but medium based upon branching coarseness
Hardiness:Zone 7a USDA
Habitat:Native to China and Taiwan
