Franklinia alatamaha
Franklin tree

A most noteworthy species, the Franklinia is small tree or large oval shrub with showy white flowers, outstanding orange to red fall color and attractive smooth gray bark. It was native along the banks of the Altamaha River in Georgia when a few seeds were collected by John Bartram in 1770. Since 1790, the plant has not been seen in the wild and all surviving plants are believed to be derived from those seeds collected by Bartam.
