Hydrangea arborescens
Smooth hydrangea

The flowers of the species are dull green in bud, opening white, and borne in flat-topped clusters, 4-6 inches across, in late June to late August. They are mildly fragrant. The wild form has a mixture of fertile flowers in the center surrounded by sterile flowers. The cultivated forms have a more ball-like inflorescence comprised mostly of sterile flowers. Unfortunately most of the cultivated forms have extremely large sterile inflorescences that are out-of-scale with the remainder of the plant. While the flowers of the cultivated forms are very popular for their showiness, the author is quite fond of the more delicate species form.
