Hydrangea paniculata
Panicled hydrangea

Large bright white flowers turn to a very attractive pink color as they age in late summer. Initially borne in mid-July, the 6 to 8" long pyramidal panicles contain both fertile and sterile flowers. The fertile flowers are typically borne on the inside, surrounded by sterile sepals. The species as well as some of the cultivars that contain both sterile and fertile flowers are the most appealing to the author because of the blending of their textures. Cultivars with almost all sterile sepals appear coarser to the eye, but are very popular with consumers.
