Hydrangea paniculata
Panicled hydrangea

Culture: An adaptable, tough and hardy hydrangea, this species is prefers sun or partial shade with well drained soils. Because it blooms on new wood, plants can be pruned to the ground in winter and flower again the following summer.

Usually no serious problems occur on this plant.

Usage: In the past, a popular plant in the landscape due to the long lasting flowers and ease of propagation. It is possibly too large to be effectively utilized in some landscapes. Pruning the plant to the ground every few years can maintain a smaller size and less leggy habit. The cultivars are generally smaller plants with larger sterile flowers. 'Praecox', 'Tardiva', 'Pink Diamond' and 'Unique' are some of my favorite selections that are available and increasing in popularity and much superior to the old standby 'Grandiflora'. 'Pink Diamond' has flowers that turn a very deep pink, whereas 'Praecox' and 'Tardiva' are white with early and late flowering, respectively.
