Ilex decidua
Possumhaw

The main ornamental feature of this species, the drupes are 3/16 - 5/16" in diameter, bright orange-red and persist a long time. In cold climates the fruits may last from September through January, while in slightly warmer climates the fruits may persist through April. In any given year, the length of persistence is dependent upon winter temperatures. Although high in wildlife value, it is toxic to humans. A male pollinator is required for fruit production. Yellow and red fruited selections are available.
