Ilex verticillata
Common winterberry

Culture: Although the species tolerates wet, sandy, or heavy soils, it performs best in acid conditions. It will grow in full sun to partial shade.

This species does not perform well in compacted sites.

Occasionally the leaves get mildew and leaf spots, but in general, there are few problems.

Usage: This is a good selection for borders, screens, massing, or along streambanks. Multiple plants are best suited for a naturalizing effect, and single specimens make striking accents. This is a real standout in the winter landscape.
