Young stems are stout, green-brown and pubescent, turning yellow-brown with tan lenticels. Older stems become glabrous and medium gray in color with distinctive dark brown, chambered pith. The stems have inversely and rounded triangular leaf scars, the upper margins of which are convex and downy. The small pad of tan hairs above each leaf scar is useful for identification.
