Black walnut

The 12-24" alternate, pinnately compound leaves each bear 15-23 serrulate leaflets, terminating either singly or in pairs. Each individual 2-5" leaflet is elliptic-oblong to lanceolate, pubescent at emergence, becoming a glabrous dark green above and remaining slightly pubescent below with maturity and exuding a pungent odor when crushed.
