Stout, greenish brown and pubescent turning slightly reddish brown in the first year, the buds of this species become gray and glabrous with notched leaf scars. The stems are devoid of the downy pad of hairs above the leaf scars that is found in butternut. The older stems have chambered tan pith with closely spaced diaphragms.
