Common privetCulture: Although a very tough plant in terms of cultural adaptability, this species should not be used due to its great susceptibility to anthracnose twig blight. This blight causes considerable stem dieback and makes plants quite unsightly. Even the improved horticultural selections of this species are susceptible. This species was once an extremely popular hedge plant in the US. The cultivar 'Cheyene' is slightly more cold hardy to USDA Zone 4a and 'Lodense' is a dwarf form with smaller leaves, maturing at 4 - 4 1/2' in height. In the Midwest, this species should be replaced with Ligustrum amurense and Ligustrum obtusifolium var. regelianum. |
