Liquidambar styraciflua
American sweetgum

The greenish brown stems become yellow-brown to reddish-brown and are aromatic and glabrous. Stems on young vigorous plants can bear corky wings on two year-old growth. When viewed in cross-section, the white-brown pith appears to be star shaped.
