| Lonicera tatarica Tatarian honeysuckleCulture: A very tough and adaptable plant, the Tatarian honeysuckle is easy to transplant, grows in full sun to moderate shade and is pH adaptable. It tolerates dry and exposed sites. This species is very susceptible to the Russian aphid, causing a witches broom of fine branching at the stem ends. This fine branching along with its partially developed and stunted foliage does not harden off prior to winter and usually dies. It is present on the plant much of the year. As a result of this insect, this species has been nearly eliminated from the landscape trade. Flint lists the following selections as being resistant: 'Arnold Red', 'Freedom' and 'Honeyrose'. Usage: The Tatarian honeysuckle has become a major weed problem in some areas. The spread of seeds by the birds has made this species a common invader in our native forests. It should not be planted. |
