The stout stems are buff-colored to orange-brown when young, turning to grayish brown with age. Stems on young trees or reasonably vigorous mature trees bear singular stout axillary spines that are about 1/2 - 3/4" long. Relatively few thorns are seen on mature trees that are non-vigorous. Some stems will have slight decurrent ridges.
