Creamy white, fragrant and very showy, the 5-6" vase-shaped flowers have 9 tepals (10-12 possible), pinkish purple stamens and are borne singly. The flowers of this species are among the first to open, often in response to early season warm weather in late March to early April. Because of their earliness, they are often injured by frost.
