| Magnolia denudata Yulan magnoliaCulture: Like many of the other magnolias, this species performs best in moist, well-drained and slightly acidic soils. The thick fleshy root system makes the species somewhat slow to establish. Cold hardiness is unfortunately a limiting factor in the Midwest. Plants on the University of Illinois campus survive but do not thrive. Flowers are often damaged by late freezes. This is a relatively problem-free species. Usage: This is an excellent plant for specimen use where its flowers provide a wealth of early spring beauty. Placement of the plant on a north or eastern exposure will slow the flowering enough to help it escape early frosts in some years. |
