Magnolia liliiflora
Lily magnolia

Purple outside and white inside, the showy flowers are borne in late April to early May, with 6 inner obovate to spatulate tepals that are 3-5" long and 3 small outer tepals that are only 1-2". In most descriptions of this species only the 6 inner tepals are mentioned. Along with the purple flower color, the late flowering time is a useful characteristic in hybridization because it helps to avoid early spring frost damage.
