Magnolia virginiana
Sweetbay magnolia

The young stems remain a bright green or yellow-green throughout the year and maintain that green color for 2-3 seasons. As with other magnolias, the stems are encircled with stipular scars at each node and they are also aromatic when scratched. The first year stems are often glaucous while older stems loose the white waxy covering. Stems more than 2-3 years old fissure and turn brown.
