Magnolia virginiana
Sweetbay magnolia

Culture: This species performs best in moist acidic soils located in partial shade, but will perform well in full sun if adequate moisture is available. This species is relatively unhappy in the Midwest due to our cold dry winter winds. Dirr indicates that the species will tolerate wet sites.

This species has very few problems.

Usage: The laurel magnolia can be a very effective small specimen or even border plant. The fragrant flowers are a nice feature when used adjacent to a patio area. The variety australis is a larger tree form, capable of growing 60' or more in height.
