| Oxydendrum arboreum SourwoodCulture: In order for this plant to survive, it requires acidic soils like almost all other plants in the Ericaceae plant family. It also should be provided with moist but well drained sites with full sun or part shade. The author has observed the death of many landscape specimens in the Midwest due to pH problems. The sourwood is somewhat difficult to transplant, therefore small specimens are best used. Sourwood has few pest problems, provided acidic and well-drained soils are provided. Usage: This is an outstanding native plant with multiple seasons of interest. It has fine-textured showy white flowers and greenish white fruits in summer, excellent fall color and a uniform habit. It makes a beautiful shade tree if you have the required acidic and well-drained soil. |
