Larger than Pachysandra terminalis, the flowers are borne on 2-4" fragrant white spikes with a slight pinkish blush above the foliage in April. They sometimes present a pungent odor, and in areas where the foliage is deciduous, they come before the leaves. The genus is named in the Greek language for the thick stamen filaments.
