Paxistima canbyi
Canby paxistima

Culture: This species prefers moist, well-drained soils high in organic matter and will tolerate either acid or alkaline soils. It can take full sun to partial shade, although it tends to be more open in shaded sites. Because of its small size it rarely requires pruning, although ratty old plants can be cut back heavily to be rejuvenated.

There are sometimes problems with leaf spot and Euonymus scale.

Usage: The Canby paxistima makes an excellent evergreen groundcover that requires little to no maintenance. It is particularly well suited to plantings with rhododendrons or other larger evergreen species, as the fine texture contrasts nicely with the coarseness of most rhododendrons. The best use of the species is in small numbers or small masses. Large masses tend to look a bit bunchy, as individual plants tend not to blend completely together.
