Phellodendron amurense
Amur corktree

Culture: Relatively tough and easy to transplant, the Amur corktree will tolerate acid or alkaline soils and is drought and pollution tolerant, but requires full sun. A well-drained, moist site is ideal for maximum growth and development.

Leaf scorch can be problematic. Mr. Scott Franz, Forester for the City of Evanston, IL, reports problems with Verticillium wilt on this species in the Chicago area. The Morton Arboretum has recently expressed concern for the escape potential of members of this genus.

Usage: The showy older bark and good fall color of this species coupled with its relatively high tolerance towards adverse conditions make it a good choice for many landscape situations. Because of its large size, it is probably best planted on sites that can accommodate its growth potential, such as in parks, campuses, and golf courses.
