| Picea abies Norway spruceFirst year stems are orange-brown to reddish-brown, while shaded branches further inside the tree are tan-gray. For proper stem identification and to distinguish the stems of this species from those of P. glauca, be sure to obtain vigorous stems on the outside of the tree growing in full sun. The stem is glabrous and emits an odor when bruised, and feels very rough after the needles have fallen. Old tertiary branches are distinctly pendulous and make the tree easily recognizable from a distance. |
