The 1/2 - 3/4" long pale green to grayish-white glaucous 4-sided needles are slightly curved and give off a pungent odor when crushed. They are crowded on the upper half of the stem, and the apex is somewhat sharp but not as prickly as Picea pungens. The stomatal bands are not prominent. The gray-green color of the foliage distinguishes this species from the dark green foliage of Picea abies.
