Flower: Monoecious and not showy, the flowers are borne in late May through June. The initially pale red male flowers turn yellow-brown as they open to 1/2 - 3/4" long. They are cylindrical, numerous and stalked. Greenish female flowers are similar in size and shape but become purple as they mature.
