Dark glossy green above with two bright white stomatal bands below, the 1/3 - 1/2" leaves are flattened in contrast to the more distinctly 4-angled needles of other spruces. The upper needle surface is keeled and the apex is somewhat rounded on older plants. They are overlapping and directed forward, being crowded mostly on the upper side of the stem.
