Pinus densiflora
Japanese red pine

Borne in fascicles of 2 and soft to the touch, the 3-5" flexible needles are straight, slender and finely serrate. The leaves are held for 3 years and are the most densely borne at the shoot tips. The persistent leaf sheaths are 1/4 - 3/8" long, tapering to 1 or 2 threads.
