Pinus densiflora
Japanese red pine

Culture: This species prefers well drained, slightly acidic soils and full sun. It is transplanted balled and burlapped with little trouble.

Although a bit slow growing, this species typically faces few major problems.

Usage: Japanese red pine makes a good specimen plant with its picturesque habit. It exhibits a lot of character in the landscape. Numerous cultivars exist, although only the variegated 'Oculus-draconis' and the umbrella-headed 'Umbraculifera' are very commonly available.
