Pinus koraiensis
Korean pine

Culture: The Korean pine is considered a very adaptable species, suitable for use in moist to dry sites with reasonable drainage. It has performed well in the heavy soils of central Illinois. As with any pine, full sun is needed for best performance, although the growth rate is slow.

This species is reported to be relatively untroubled by many problems, although relatively few specimens are available for continual examination.

Usage: The Korean pine makes an excellent specimen plant and is well suited to modern landscapes because of its adaptability, excellent winter color and slow growth rate that allow the plant to remain in scale. It can make a good screen or mass as a backdrop to bright plants in the shrub border. It is a species that merits much greater use. It is sometimes chosen for its similarity of appearance to Pinus strobus but with a better winter color.
