| Platanus x hispanica London planetreeCulture: Culturally superior to the sycamore, this hybrid exhibits resistance to anthracnose and is not as susceptible to pollution. Like the sycamore, it prefers moist, rich, well-drained soils in full to partial sun. Cankers, powdery mildew, borers, and lacebugs can cause problems.Usage: In my mind this hybrid is nowhere near as beautiful as the native sycamore in ideal conditions; the mottled olive bark simply cannot compare with the striking white of a Platanus occidentalis. Its resistance to anthracnose and increased tolerance make it a more likely candidate for most landscapes, however. Because of its large size and messy character, it is probably best suited for parks and open recreation areas. |
