| Prunus cerasifera PlumCulture: See Prunus culture. This species tolerates dry conditions, is pH adaptable and needs pruning to correct a strong cross-branching tendency. Full sun is needed for best color of purple-leaved cultivars. This species is relatively short-lived, 20-30 years being a reasonable expectation. Although susceptible to a list of problems such as borers, aphids and canker, this species is generally not seriously troubled by these pests, provided it is grown in a reasonably cool climate.Usage: The species is largely unused in the modern landscape. The purple-leaved selections however, continue to be popular as specimens and in small masses. |
